About the role

Secure Every Identity, from AI to Human

Identity is the key to unlocking the potential of AI. Okta secures AI by building the trusted, neutral infrastructure that enables organizations to safely embrace this new era. This work requires a relentless drive to solve complex challenges with real-world stakes. We are looking for builders and owners who operate with speed and urgency and execute with excellence.

This is an opportunity to do career-defining work. We're all in on this mission. If you are too, let's talk.

The Okta Android platform team is responsible for building Okta's Android Apps and SDKs. Okta Verify is a mobile app that allows users to securely access their apps via 2-step verification, ensuring that they, and only they, can access their app accounts. It integrates deeply with Android system features, communicating with our backend to grant proper application access across a wide variety of Android devices.

We are looking for an experienced Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join the Android platform team. The team is responsible for developing and maintaining Okta Verify and associated SDKs across the Android ecosystem (phones, tablets, and wearable devices).

In this role, you will report to the Manager, Quality Assurance and be responsible for robust, secure releases and test automation of the Okta Verify application and SDKs on the Android platform. You will also be responsible for developing test scripts, building and expanding the test automation framework, and working collaboratively with application developers to execute tests, log, track, and validate test results.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Define and own the Android test automation strategy and framework architecture for Okta Verify and its SDKs.
  • Mentor and technically guide engineers across quality and development teams; write and review designs and code in Java/Kotlin with colleagues of varying seniority.
  • Establish and drive quality metrics, including test coverage, flakiness rates, and CI pipeline health, holding teams accountable to targets.
  • Partner with Security to define and execute security and privacy test coverage for Android authentication flows.
  • Represent quality in architecture and design reviews for new Okta Verify app and SDK features.
  • Define and communicate quality plans for the Android platform and dependency scrum teams.

Testing and Automation

  • Design and build structured test automation frameworks using Espresso, UI Automator, and Jetpack Compose testing tools using Kotlin.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality functional, regression, performance, and end-to-end tests for Okta Verify across diverse Android form factors and OS versions.
  • Validate bug fixes and recommend product improvements across Android OS versions to ensure seamless user experiences for major and minor Android/Google operating system updates.
  • Leverage CI/CD tools (e.g., CircleCI, GitHub Actions), cloud device testing platforms (e.g., Digital.ai, Sauce Labs, BrowserStack), JIRA, XRay, and ADB tools to identify and raise quality issues with development teams in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with product management, software development, and cross-functional teams using JIRA and Confluence to define test plans grounded in business requirements and application software designs.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of software test automation experience for Android mobile applications, with 3+ years of hands-on experience building and maintaining Android UI test automation frameworks.
  • Proficiency in developing Android test tools and scripts using Kotlin and Java.
  • Experience defining test strategy at a platform or product-area level, leading release testing, and managing complex product issues.
  • Experience building and maintaining Mobile CI/CD pipelines (e.g., CircleCI, GitHub Actions, Bitrise).
  • Hands-on experience with core Android testing tools and frameworks (Espresso, UI Automator, JUnit, AndroidX Test).
  • Experience with collaboration and test management tools like JIRA, Confluence, and XRay.
  • Experience with scripting languages like Python, Bash/Shell, etc.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Android security and hardware-backed features (Android Keystore system, StrongBox, BiometricPrompt API, TEE).
  • Experience with cloud device testing platforms (e.g., Digital.ai, Bitbar, BrowserStack, Firebase Test Lab).
  • Experience testing Jetpack Compose UI elements.

Education

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields preferred.
