Position Type: Full-time, On-Site

Department: Engineering / Manufacturing

Reports To: Pack Assembly Manager

Company Overview

MATERIAL is an advanced manufacturing company rethinking how batteries are designed, built, and integrated into products. Our proprietary HYBRID3D™ platform enables us to 3D print batteries in custom shapes, making better use of space and opening new possibilities for product design. We bring together materials science, engineering, and manufacturing to build the next generation of energy storage and strengthen American manufacturing.

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support battery pack production through the design, fabrication, and implementation of assembly fixtures, jigs, and automated test and manufacturing equipment. This role works closely with production, manufacturing engineering, and quality teams to improve assembly line safety, efficiency, reliability, and product quality.

The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical design skills with practical mechanical aptitude and enjoys taking equipment from concept through fabrication, assembly, and production use.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical fixtures, jigs, tooling, and assembly aids in CATIA to support battery pack manufacturing.
  • Develop mechanical systems for automated manufacturing and test equipment, collaborating with electrical, controls, and test engineers.
  • Create detailed part drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of materials for fabrication and procurement.
  • Perform hands-on fabrication, assembly, installation, and troubleshooting of tooling and equipment.
  • Support equipment commissioning and validation to ensure designs meet production, safety, and quality requirements.
  • Work directly with production operators and technicians to identify assembly challenges and implement practical improvements.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues on the assembly line and develop solutions that reduce downtime and improve repeatability.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and machine shops to manufacture and deliver custom components.
  • Maintain design documentation and support updates to equipment and work instructions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics. Exceptions are made for extensive work experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working in a production or manufacturing environment; internship and co-op experience count toward this requirement.
  • Proficiency in CATIA for 3D modeling, assembly design, and engineering drawings.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform hands-on fabrication and assembly.
  • Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, manufacturing processes, material selection, and tolerances.
  • Ability to use common hand tools and measurement instruments.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with engineers, technicians, and production operators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting battery pack assembly or other electromechanical manufacturing operations.
  • Experience designing fixtures, jigs, or custom production equipment.
  • Familiarity with machining, sheet metal fabrication, and additive manufacturing.
  • Exposure to pneumatic systems, actuators, sensors, or industrial automation.
  • Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), design for manufacturing and assembly, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Experience assembling or testing battery cells, modules, packs, or battery management systems.
  • Familiarity with computer controlled equipment, sensors, barcode scanners, or automated test systems.
  • Experience modifying simple Python scripts for data logging, test support, or basic automation.
  • Familiarity with prototyping, Lean manufacturing, traceability systems, or manufacturing execution systems (MES).

What Success Looks Like

You reliably perform assembly work safely, accurately, and at the required pace. You are comfortable working alongside automated equipment, recognize when something is wrong, and use your technical skills to help keep production running smoothly. You value both the consistency of daily production work and opportunities to contribute to practical process improvements.
