About the role
Republic Affairs is a Washington, DC-based strategic communications firm that helps civic organizations operate with confidence, earn public trust, and advance their missions.
If you know how to find the story in a campaign and get reporters to cover it, we want to hear from you.
About the role
As a Communications Associate, you’ll handle media relations for a portfolio of clients, from developing the story to booking the interview to tracking the coverage. You’ll work closely with our strategists and directly with clients.
Reaching people today means working well beyond traditional outlets, including Substack, podcasts, YouTube, and independent creators. We want someone who knows that world as well as they know traditional press.
Your responsibilities
- Tie client campaigns to the news of the day and pitch them to outlets, newsletters, and creators.
- Book client spokespeople on TV, radio, and podcasts.
- Prepare spokespeople with talking points and media train them to stay on message.
- Write and edit press releases, statements, Substack posts, and the occasional op-ed.
- Develop and execute earned media campaigns from start to finish.
- Monitor and clip coverage, and produce media reports for clients.
- Build media lists and strengthen relationships with the people who cover our clients’ issues.
What we’re looking for
- 2–4 years of experience in communications, media relations, journalism, campaigns, or public affairs.
- Strong writing, editing, and research skills. You can turn around clean, persuasive copy on deadline.
- A track record of landing coverage.
- You pay close attention to how media is changing and where audiences are going.
- Persistence. You follow up, and then follow up again.
- Self-driven, with the ability to manage multiple clients independently.
- Ability to be in our downtown DC office five days a week. This is not a remote or hybrid role.
Preferred qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Existing relationships with reporters, producers, or bookers.
- Experience media training spokespeople.
- Understanding of nonprofit structures, including what 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations can and can’t say publicly.
- Experience with Muck Rack, Cision, Meltwater, SnapStream, Critical Mention, or similar tools.
- Comfort using AI tools to speed up writing and research.
Why join us
- Base salary range: $60,000 – $80,000, commensurate with experience
- 100% covered medical insurance
- 401(k) matching program
- Metro-accessible, downtown DC location
- Opportunities to learn, grow, and do work that supports organizations strengthening civic life
